NAW Files Amicus Brief Challenging the Application of
California’s Drop Shipment Tax to Out-of-State
Wholesaler-Distributors
November
2005 - NAW - As you may recall, NAW filed an amicus (friend
of the court) brief in California late last year in a case challenging a
California statute which imposed a California drop shipment tax on some
out-of-state wholesaler distributors.
The appellate court ruled in
favor of the California Board of Equalization in support of the statute,
and the case is now being appealed to the California Supreme Court.
This case could be of vital
interest to any wholesaler-distributors who drop ship into California, and if the challenge of the California statute
is not successful, other states could well follow suit and adopt similar
tax laws affecting our industry.
Because of the importance of
this case, NAW has filed an amicus
brief in the California Supreme Court.

Two
NAW/DREF Releases on wholesale
distribution
October 2005
- NAW - NAW/DREF announced today the release of two books
focused on the wholesale distribution industry:
- OUTLOOK
2006 - A supplement to the recent Facing the
Forces of Change: The Road to Opportunity
study, this book offers a diverse collection of insights from a
power-packaged group of 11 wholesale distribution industry analysts,
authors, professors and consultants, each of whom provide their
assessment and predictions about the major trends in the wholesale
distribution industry, not to mention immediate concerns as
well.
- CONNECT WITH YOUR SUPPLIERS: A
WHOLESALER-DISTRIBUTOR'S GUIDE TO ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS
SYSTEMS - In this
release, author James A. Narus, Ph.D. examines the key managerial issues
and decisions that distributors must address when selecting and
using electronic communications systems.
sales
force compensation - how does your company measure
up?
November 2005 - NAW - How a company pays its sales force is a
vital recruitment and retention tool, yet most businesses fall into one of
two categories: they haven't assessed the effectiveness of their
compensation structure in years, or they are constantly changing it
because they haven't yet found what works well. Says Dave Kahle, "If
you're like most companies, your sales force costs range around 25-35
percent of gross profit. Doesn't it make sense to at least investigate the
potential of changing the compensation plan to make that group more
productive? A couple points' worth of improvement in the sales force's
productivity will drop directly to your bottom line." Read the full story
