optimize the supply chain to be competitive

July 1, 2004 - NAW SmartBrief urges companies to rally the troops to get ready for supply chain versus supply chain. Simplify, collaborate, adapt.  Those steps to supply-chain optimization seem so natural and easy in the context of Dell, Procter & Gamble and Wal-Mart.  Yet why is supply-chain optimization still the exception rather than the rule?  It's no longer enough to just make a product better, faster and cheaper. Now, with increasingly complex supply chains and partnerships, companies also need to master and optimize the entire process.   IndustryWeek's Value Chain (7/1)

bar codes will move to new global standard

July 14, 2004, NAW SmartBrief, - The first product to employ a bar code was Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum in 1974, and while American goods worked on a 12-digit bar code, European goods were using a 13-number code. The Uniform Code Council has told North American retailers beginning next year their scanners need to be able to read 13-digit codes, although 12-digit items will still be scannable on the new machines.   The New York Times (free registration) (7/12)

solutions, not prices, deliver profits

Locksmith Ledger, July 2004 - Stanley J. Maziuk, President of Maziuk Wholesale Distributors and Past President of SHDA, outlines in an article in the July issue of the Locksmith Ledger, the value of strong relationships between Distributor and Customer.  He points out that "Warehouse clubs and online sellers may have a short offering of several product lines, or have deep expertise with a narrow focus at or below prices to which the locksmith is accustomed, but often times, convenience and the flexibility created by a strong relationship are often more important than price."  He goes on to state that "We all rely on various types of assistance everyday, be it availability of product, technical expertise, special payment consideration, or any sort of flexibility.  The distrbutor is still in the best position to bring this relationship-based value to the locksmith."

while we are winning, the battle isn't quite over!  fan ban update

Jade West, Senior VP, Government Relations, NAW reports that “While we didn't get all the way across the finish line with our fax ban bill this month, we made great progress and I am encouraged about our prospects for getting a bill to the President's desk for his signature in September.”  Jade West was referring to Bill H.R. 4600 which was introduced in June by a bi-partisan group of Representatives.  The bill was approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee in late June by a voice vote, and reported to the full House of Representatives for their consideration.  H.R. 4600 was approved by the full House of Representatives this past Tuesday (July 20th) by a voice vote.  For more information on the progress of Bill H.R. 4600 visit www.naw.org

Once Again, the nations worried eyes turn to california!

The California Health Tax, also know as the "Pay or Play" law is back in the news as California voters will have an opportunity to repeal it in the Fall through the ballot box.  Follow this link to the organization opposing California S.B. 2 (also the organization championing the ballot initiative to repeal S.B. 2) http://www.stopthehealthtax.org/  This law does not only affect California residents!  If your company has a california presence with more than 20 employees who work 100 or more hours a month, then your company is affected by S.B. 2.  Even if you already provide health coverage, you may be required to pay the new health care tax in advance (estimated at $2,276 per employee for companies with 200 or fewer employees; $5,718 per employee for companies with 201 or more employees) and then wait for a rebate from the state.  If the effort to repeal S.B. 2 fails, then there is a real danger that the pay or play/national health care contagion will spread beyond California's borders.

report: nam report offers a "new take on offshore production"

June 2004 - There is a popular misperception that American companies have been shifting their production offshore to low wage countries as quickly as they can in a “race to the bottom”.  But that’s not what the data show.  Official U.S. government statistics show that in 2002, the latest available year, U.S manufacturers invested $26 billion in Canada, Europe, and other high wage countries and only about $3 billion in other countries.  That means that about 90% was invested in high-wage countries, and that ratio has been rising in recent years, not falling.  Moreover the vast bulk of the production of the U.S. – owned factories overseas is consumed in those markets – not shipped back to the United States.  And remember, 85% of the American manufacturer’s investment dollar goes right here, in the Unites States.  Only 15% goes abroad.
